GET THE BEST FROM YOUR PIPE WATER

ENVIRONMENTALLY PREFERRED DESIGN

From its efficient design, to the way it’s manufactured, and to the plastic bottles it prevents from ever becoming waste, the eSpring® system is a giant step in the direction of safe, clean, and sustainable drinking water.

A DESIGN THAT REFLECTS RESPONSIBILITY

Amway takes its corporate commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable environment very seriously. This is evident across Amway’s product lines, including eSpring® Water Treatment Systems. From an efficient design to responsible manufacturing processes to the numerous plastic water bottles eSpring users can avoid, eSpring is a giant step in the direction of safe, clean, and environmentally responsible drinking water.

A LIFETIME PRODUCT DESIGN
Amway was able to reduce the product’s plastic content by 51%, its global warming potential by 46% and its energy use by 46 compared to a previous model sold in Japan. All this was accomplished without any reduction in the product’s performance or ability to deliver exceptionally clean, great-tasting water. The research and development that resulted in the unique technologies incorporated into the redesign was part of Amway’s ongoing effort to minimize the environmental impact of its products and processes.
As part of Amway’s evolving Life Cycle Management approach to total product performance, a formal Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was conducted in 2009 to compare the current eSpring Purifier with an older model sold in Japan. The LCA documented the new model’s strong improvements in environmental performance and allowed Amway to build its experience and capabilities with the life cycle management approach.

IMPROVED EFFICIENCY
The redesigned eSpring® system uses 46% less energy than the model previously sold in Japan. Calculated over a ten year period, the energy saved by the current eSpring Water Purifier is enough to power a town of 9,000 people for one year. The UV lamp features new wireless “instant on” technology, which enables the eSpring system to provide quality water without being on all of the time.

eSpring Water Treatment Systems use a carbon block filter designed for optimum efficiency. The design maximizes the surface area for the filtration process and requires less carbon than other pressed carbon filters. The carbon comes from coconut shells – a renewable, less carbon-intense source than coal.

LESS WASTE
The eSpring® “green” approach incorporates a modular design that uses significantly less raw materials while allowing the unit to operate more efficiently. Modular components also facilitate maintenance. eSpring design reduces the amount of parts that need to be replaced in the unit and the possibility of service issues. The system incorporates a new power technology that uses wireless connections – reducing corrosion and potential service issues. The eSpring system is not only greener; it’s simpler to manufacture, less expensive to operate, more reliable, and longer lasting.
Bottled Water and eSpring
Waste generated by plastic bottles is a huge environmental problem. According to Amway’s 2009 LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), an eSpring® System—over its life cycle—uses 99% less plastic than typical bottled water when calculated for an equivalent volume of water. Clean water delivered in an environmentally responsible manner is an issue of increasing concern worldwide. The eSpring System addresses this concern.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the eSpring® Carbon Water Treatment System replace the eSpring Water Purifier?
No. The eSpring Water Purifier will continue to be our premier treatment system. But the addition of the eSpring Carbon Water Treatment System offers consumers a choice of which best-in-class water treatment unit to purchase based on their needs or budget..

What’s the difference between the two units?
The primary difference is that the eSpring Water Purifier has ultraviolet light technology, which destroys 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99% of viruses, and 99.95% of protozoan cysts. Also, the eSpring Water Purifier is NSF Standard 55 certified in addition to NSF Standards 42 and 53 that cover both units.

Both units feature carbon-filter technology, which means that both units effectively reduce:
  • Lead, mercury, MTBE, and over 40 endocrine disruptors.
  • More than 140 organic impurities.
  • More than 13 disinfection byproducts.
  • Radon and radon decay byproducts.
  • 30 pesticides and pesticide byproducts.
  • Two pharmaceutical impurities (1,7 alpha-Ethinyl Estradiol ((EE2)) and Atenolol)
And both the eSpring Water Purifier and the eSpring Carbon Water Treatment System are proven to improve taste, odor, and clarity of water.

What’s the new superiority claim for eSpring?
It’s as follows:
eSpring® by Amway is the world’s largest-selling brand of point-of-use home water treatment systems.*
*Based on a Verify Markets study of 2009 global sales.

How will I know if my eSpring Carbon Water Treatment System is properly installed?
If you followed each step of the instructions in the manual included with the Above Counter (11-0192, 11-0192C) or the Below Counter (11-0193, 11-0193C or 11-1491, 11-1491C) eSpring Carbon Water Treatment System and you have used the faucet described in the manual or the single-line faucet kit with pressure regulator, your eSpring Carbon Water Treatment System should be properly installed.

Can I use the faucet that I purchased for my previous Amway water treatment system with eSpring Carbon Water Treatment System (11-0193)?
If the faucet is a single-line faucet or the three-line cream-colored faucet, such as the E86 from the original Gen IV Water Treatment System, you will need to purchase an additional tubing reducing adapter or purchase the Single Line Faucet Conversion Kit (10-1398). See the instruction manual for more information.

Can I connect my Below Counter eSpring Carbon Water Treatment System (11-0193) to my refrigerator’s icemaker?
Yes.  A tee is included with the system. This kit includes a pressure regulator and all the fittings you'll need to connect your eSpring Carbon Water Treatment System to your refrigerator's icemaker, except for pressurized 1/4 inch (6 mm) OD tubing, available from almost any local plumbing supply or hardware store. Be sure that the tubing you use is certified for use in drinking water applications. To maintain your warranty, all components must be installed properly, following the instructions shipped with the kit.

What position should the auxiliary faucet be in when I'm changing the eSpring replacement filter or during flushing?
The faucet must be in the "on" position, with the supply water turned off.

After replacing the filter in my eSpring Carbon Water Treatment System, how tight does the retaining ring need to be to maintain a watertight seal?
The retaining ring holds the filter bracket in place and only needs to be threaded until it stops. Threading the retaining ring into position doesn't require a great deal of force. After installing a new cartridge, the retaining ring should spin freely on the threads until it reaches its first stop. Even though the retaining ring may feel slightly loose to the touch, this is as tight as it needs to be to hold the bracket in place, which will provide a watertight seal. Overtightening the retaining ring may damage your eSpring Carbon Water Treatment System and impair its ability to hold the bracket in position and maintain a complete, watertight seal.

Will the carbon filter reduce all impurities?
No. Activated carbon readily adsorbs (causes to stick to its surface) organic carbon-based compounds, but it doesn't have an equivalent reduction capacity for inorganic compounds such as iron, nitrates, hardness minerals (such as calcium and magnesium), or soluble heavy metals like chromium or cadmium.

Can I still continue to use the unit without changing the filter when I’m supposed to?
It is not recommended. The filter life is determined based on performance testing. Failure to maintain the unit as recommended may impair the performance.

What inorganic compounds will the eSpring filter reduce?
It's possible for a well-designed carbon filter to reduce certain inorganic impurities. The eSpring carbon-block filter has been certified for the reduction of lead, mercury, and radon and its decay products.

How does the activated carbon-block filter work?
Carbon molecules tend to attract other carbon molecules. Most health-effect impurities, pesticides, and their byproducts, VOCs and THMs, for example, contain carbon molecules. The eSpring carbon-block filter is "activated" carbon, processed to create pores in the carbon that increase its surface area. This increased surface area increases the ability of our filter to attract and "trap" carbon-based impurities as water passes through the block. Since the surface area of the pores is limited, the carbon filter has a limited trapping capacity. That's why the filter must be replaced every year.

Does the eSpring unit change the taste of water?
The taste of water depends on what's in the water. The eSpring Carbon Water Treatment System does not remove sulfur, but it will be effective for many impurities that affect taste, odor, and clarity of water, such as chlorine.

Where is this eSpring unit installed?
It is installed under the sink and connected to a dedicated faucet that must be purchased separately (either the eSpring three-line faucet or a single-line faucet of your choice, provided you use the Single Line Faucet Conversion Kit for installation).

I'm not mechanically inclined, so I'm not sure I could install the unit myself. How difficult is installation?
This Below Counter model comes with a specially designed attachment kit. It allows for connection to a dedicated faucet that you can insert in any available opening in your sink, such as an opening for a soap dispenser. We offer four faucet options (10-9431, 10-9432, 10-9433, and 10-9691) or you may purchase from an outside source. Installation may require a plumber as you need a connection to your cold water pipe under the sink. The unit also requires four AA batteries, not included.

How will I know when it's time to change the filter?
You'll know just by looking at the LED display on the unit. It shows you at a glance the filter's remaining life on an indicator that resembles a gas gauge on a car. When the filter is nearing the end of its life, the last bar becomes yellow and the unit beeps once when activated.  When it is time to change, the last bar becomes red and the unit beeps when the water is on.

How often should I change the batteries?
There is an indicator light on the display module that will tell you when your battery is dead. It is best to change each time you change your filter even if there still appears to be life in the batteries. Changing the batteries does not reset your unit.

Is the filter hard to change?
No. The patented, easily replaceable eSpring replacement filter screws in like a light bulb and lasts for 1,320 gallons or one year, whichever comes first. And the eSpring monitor automatically resets itself when the filter is replaced. There is simply nothing else this easy out there.

I've just replaced the cartridge in my eSpring Carbon Water Treatment System, but the system is still beeping. How can I get it to stop?
If your system continues to beep or makes a constant tone after you have replaced the cartridge, it's likely that the top and cartridge are not aligned correctly.
  • Remove the top shroud (display/cover) and new filter again.
  • Reinsert the filter – first thread it and then turn it all the way to the right to tighten it.
  • Align the top shroud properly.
  • If it's correctly seated, there should be no gap between the top shroud and the base housing.
Once the filter has been replaced correctly, your system should operate properly for another year or 1,320 gallons of water, whichever comes first.

Does the eSpring Water Purifier reduce pharmaceutical byproducts?
eSpring has been third-party verified to reduce two pharmaceuticals that have been detected at low levels in drinking water supplies. These pharmaceuticals are:
  • Atenolol, a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure and prevent chest pains. It is in a class of medications called beta blockers.
  • Ethinyl Estradiol (17-alpha ethynyl estradiol) or EE2, an estrogen used in oral contraceptives and for the treatment of menopausal and post-menopausal symptoms. It is also a suspected endocrine disrupting compound (EDC), which means that it may mimic natural hormones in humans and wildlife.
